If you are a user that is concerned with security and
privacy, then PGP is for you. If your use PGP and want to
practice safe computing, you can check the PGP signed
message or file - whereby you will see if the message or
file is indeed legitimate.
MIT no longer distributes the PGP Freeware for personal, non-
commercial use, to U.S. citizens in the United States,
or to Canadian citizens in Canada. They used to distribute
for the following platforms: Windows 95/98/NT/2000, DOS,
MacOS, AIX, HPUX, Linux, and Solaris. The Amiga versions
were never carried at MIT. MIT shut down the service as they
thought the versions were too old.
Thanks to Robert 'Rob' Knop, Amiga users have a port of PGP.
Rob ceased development of AmigaPGP after version 2.6.3, due to
the restrictions at the time. AmigaPGP 2.6.3 is much easier
to work with and much smaller in size than AmigaPGP5.
AmigaPGP is a legal port, as long as it is used for non-
commercial purposes. There are seperate USA/Canadian and
International versions available. The International versions
are referred to as PGPi. If you run into compatibility
problems when checking signatures that have been signed with
version 5, you could ask the sender to use their PGP5 in
backward compatible mode for your 2.6.3.

PGP In The News 22 January 2012 - Phil Zimmermann no longer sells PGP
We were able to puchase PGP Home and PGP Pro on Phil Zimmermann's site, which
is where I purchased my Pro version in 2009. When it became time to renew my
Bonze yearly membership, the sales and renewal options had disappeared. Since
you have to renew from your seller, and my seller had retired his page, this
is when I found out that Phil no longer was doing the PGP sales and renewals.
15 December 2005 - PGP Freeware no longer carried by MIT
MIT no longer distributes the PGP Freeware for personal, non-
commercial use, to U.S. citizens in the United States, or to Canadian
citizens in Canada. They used to distribute for the following platforms:
Windows 95/98/NT/2000, DOS, MacOS, AIX, HPUX, Linux, and Solaris. The
Amiga versions were never carried at MIT. MIT shut down the service as
they thought the versions were too old.
06 December 2002 - PGP 8.0 Free Public Beta Version Now From PGP Corp
Philip Zimmermann, original author of Pretty Good Privacy, says: PGP
Corporation has revived the development of PGP for Windows XP and Mac
OS X, which had stalled under NAI. If you are using these new operating
systems, then you will want to download the free PGP 8.0 public beta
version now from PGP Corp. If you keep using the old versions of PGP
from NAI, you will have to stick with Windows 2000 or Mac OS/9. Mac OS/9
users can also get PGP Corp's PGP 7.2 for OS/9.
03 December 2002 - News Release from PGP International
PGP 8.0 was released today, and is available both as freeware and
commercial software. The source code is also available for peer
review. PGP 8.0 is the first PGP version that fully supports Windows

July 18, 2002 - PGP Plug-in For Outlook Has A Hole: Patch Available
Robert Lemos of CNET News.com reported on Friday 12th July 2002
A hole in the PGP encryption add-on for Microsoft's Outlook email client
could let attackers launch hostile programs on victims' machines. There's
a patch - but it's not that simple to fix. The issue doesn't affect PGP
Corporate Desktop users, stated Network Associates in its advisory. The
patch is available on the company's Web site.

September 25, 2001 - PGP Multiple User ID Vulnerability
Pretty Good Privacy International, (PGPi) says a vulnerability in PGP's
display of key validity has been discovered that could allow an attacker
to fool users into thinking that a valid signature was created by what is
actually an invalid user ID. The attack was discovered by Sieuwert van
Otterloo, and works on all PGP 5.x, 6.x and 7.x versions. NAI has already
released a hotfix that corrects the problem for the latest freeware and
commercial PGP versions. See the original report and NAI's advisory.

program (Unix, Windows and DOS), but a GUI version is planned.>BR>
April 25, 2001 - PGPi News: PGP 7.0.3 Hotfix 1 Available
Pretty Good Privacy International, (PGPi) says this hotfix corrects a
bug in the Windows version of PGP 7.0.3 which made it possible for an
attacker to create a .sig file containing a DLL and trick PGP into
loading this DLL instead of the system DLL. This hotfix will force the
PGP component DLLs to always load from the directory they were installed
in. Additionally, it will force a "Save As" dialog for any extracted
files with a .dll, .sys, or .vxd extension.

March 22, 2001 - PGP Inventor Says Encryption Flaw Minor
Story at CNet News by Robert Lemos, says that a flaw found by two Czech
researchers in the popular OpenPGP digital signature standard is real but
relatively minor, Phil Zimmermann, chairman of the open-source group,
said Wednesday. "This is not a practical attack," he said. "Your
adversary has to be able to modify your private key. That means they have
to have access to your computer." Once an attacker has access, there are
many other ways they can monitor the system. That makes the attack
largely irrelevant, Zimmermann said. You can also read the article by
James Middleton of vnunet titled OpenPGP Flaw Confirmed.

August 24, 2000 - CERT issued Advisory CA-2000-18, titled
PGP May Encrypt Data With Unauthorized ADKs. This advisory has
to do with PGP versions 5.5.x through 6.5.3, domestic and
international. In part this advisory states:
Additional Decryption Keys (ADKs) is a feature introduced into
PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) versions 5.5.x through 6.5.3 that
allows authorized extra decryption keys to be added to a user's
public key certificate. However, an implementation flaw in PGP
allows unsigned ADKs which have been maliciously added to a
certificate to be used for encryption. Philip Zimmermann,
author of PGP, says in part "The MIT web site should have a new
PGP 6.5.x freeware release early Friday, and the NAI/PGP web
site should have patches out for the commercial releases at
about the same time." Read the full story about how
PGP May Encrypt Data With Unauthorized ADKs.
May 30, 2000 - CERT issued Advisory CA-2000-09, titled
Flaw in PGP 5.0 Key Generation. This advisory has to do with
the UNIX platform. In part this advisory states:
UNIX systems having a /dev/random device running any version
of PGP 5.0, including U.S. Commercial, U.S. Freeware, and
International versions. Under certain circumstances, PGP v5.0
generates keys that are not sufficiently random, which may
allow an attacker to predict keys and, hence, recover
information encrypted with that key. Read the full story
about the Flaw in PGP 5.0 Key Generation.
December 13, 1999 - The US Government granted Network
Associates, Inc. (NAI) an export license for PGP. Read more
