Hello,
I am very very vexed. My computer is acting very strangly and lately I
have been having internet problems. After finding a trojan in my
computer called formatc.B.Trojan and deleting it (maybe I shouldn't
have done that!) my internet explorer is constantly showing me the
error "Error Page Cannot Be Displayed". Now this isn't bad if you get
it maybe once or twice everytime you surf, but I have to click refresh
5 to six times before the browser actually goes to the webpage. This
ontop of a 56k connection is extremely time consuming and wastes my
internet hours. Not only that but once I do reach a page that finally
works, a pop up that says "Error Page cannot be displayed" comes up,
BUT then it keeps opening up other windows that say the same thing
untill I either close windows explorer or my computer runs out of
resources. Even getting to this webpage had the same problems. This
isn't something that I have been fighting for a few days, but for a
few months now. I have tried a lot of things, but I don't know if I
have another virus, my registry files are messed up (which they
shouldn't) or if my internet explorer is screwed up. I would really
appreciate another (or a few) minds help on this. I have tried to
reinstall windows, but the computer freezes before it finishes, but I
don't want to fix the problem that way, I want to figure out what the
problem is. Thank you for your time. (sorry for the long email). Till
the later now.

Reply Subject: Get F-Prot Anti-Virus
Hi MM2,
My suggestion for a fast (maybe) insite into the computer problem
would be to get the f-prot anti-virus program. The one for the
DOS is free, and if you have a virus/worm/trojan, it would have
to be cleaned up with the DOS program anyways. There is a link to
the f-prot stuff at vht-can on downloads page:
http://www.vht-can.ca/downloads.html
... As a sidenote, I just got your chat registration, and was going
to send you an e-mail to re-do the registration and give me a
handle... but I'll give you a handle -- use your 'MM2' name for
the chat handle (handle = the name you want to be called when in
the chatroom) I'm up now, and will go get that done, and send out
the confirmation letter when it is completed.

Hello Charlene,
I'm really surprised that you responded so quickly. I have gotten used
to the delays, and let downs of the net on my computer and wasn't
expecting a respose a for a while, or a response period! I just want
to say I appreciate your help.
I went to the link and tried to download f-prot dos. Its not working
for me. I tried the ftp link first, and gozilla started the download
screen but no connection was established, so having been in this
situation more times than I want to remember, I went to the page that
contains the zip file, and tried downloading it. Same problem. Not
only is surfing a pain in the butt, so is downloading. How would this
f-prot help anyway? I have already downloaded microsofts "superpatch",
did the system file checker, registry backup, and two more virus
programs with my antinorton virus protection 2002 program (and yes I
did up date it). I'm not too familiar with dos. I had to use it once
to get rid of the blebola worm that affected the sysjrx.exe file. I
also tried looking for the affects of the formatc.B.Trojan virus, but
there was nothing on the net. Maybe it wasn't damaging enough? Anyway,
without giving you my life story, I'll keep trying to download f-prot.
Thanks again for your time. Till the later now.
P.S: MM2 will be great for a handle. Getting into hotmail has really
become a pain lol. Halfway through login the Error page cannot display
comes up and I have to log in again and pray to let the sign in
process completely complete itself. Then hopefully the pop up window
thing doesn't start lol.

Hi MM2,
... Thaknyou for saying you appreciate the help. :)
... In regards to the weirdo stuff with Hotmail, just get a free
account at Fastmail (http://www.fastmail.fm/mail/login + choose
the 'Sign up'), and you are able to use the POP retreival to get
your mail from your Hotmail account. I use Fastmail and they are
great. I'm a paid member, but the free account is still great.
... There have been a couple of replies to your cry for help.
See your inbox at hotmail for the items that i sent not too
long ago (maybe around 4 pm today Tuesday)
IDEA: How about if I send you the f-prot program and updated
signature files, and then you don't need to download from a
ftp or website. Do you think that would work?
Till later, and maybe see you in the webchat

Hey Charlene,
I found out what my problem was. It turns out that I had a ton of
spyware on my computer and one of the spyware was called Netsetter, or
Webhancer, and it was messing up my internet connection. I found a
file on my system and deleted it, and then used a special interenet
repair device to fix what the file had messed up. Now my internet
works great and so does my computer I hope this helps anyone else who
might be having the same problem.

... If the worm you are referring to is 'W32.Kwbot.C.Worm',
found at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/
w32.kwbot.c.worm.html then it says the worm also adds the
CMD cmd32.exe to one of the registry keys, creates a subkey, and
may change the value data, and on and on. :(
Symantec does have removal instructions at the above url.
... There is a 'Windows 95/98/98SE/Me Q&A Forum' that has some
cmd32.exe discussion. See

Hello again Mirza,
... This just came in from an anti-virus help team member:
| It seems that the worm has implemented itself into the
| registries autostart key.
| He must use Windows own program REGEDIT (Start - run
| Program - Regedit.exe) to fix this problem.
|
| In Regedit he can use the search - Function to locate
| the entry.
|
| (could probably be in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARET/MICRUSOFT
|/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/RUN
|
| or in
|
| HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARET/MICRUSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/RUN

| Hope this helps,

Hello again Mirza,
... This was sent in from Virus Help Team Netherlands. In
reference to the virus killer to get, please note that it would
also mean to update to the latest version and signature files
for your particular anit-virus program, if you have one already.
There a a few excellent free DOS anti-virus programs listed on
the downloads page, as an example F-Prot for DOS.
| Then I would advice the person to at least get a virus killer
| throuhg a friends or work computer. Make it so that it can be
| started from either CD or floppy disc and then check the system
|
| Then if this is a Windows machine it should be possible to use
| extract or something alike (I should look this up if someone
| really needs it so please let me know if this information is
| appreciated) and replace the lost file with the original from
| the installation CD.
|
| This should fix the persons problem. I hope :)
|
| Cheers,
|

Hello Jack,
... I forwarded your message to the PC Anti-Virus people, and a reply
that came in so far, said "This could be a trojan. He should run an
actual Antivirus, as many viruses and trojans could cause such
effects."
... If you have an Antivirus program, be sure you have the latest
version and the latest signature/dat files. If you do not have an
antivirus program, then I suggest F-Prot for DOS, sheich is free for
home use. The Windows version (fee) is excellent. Follow the link for
my homepage (it is the downloads page), and you wil find links to the
F-Prot for DOS plus others.

Hello Jack,
... You should have received an e-mail reply from Torben with the
Subject: Re: Request VHT Forum help: Virus Identification and Fix
Sought, with a lot of good information.
... Also, here is a third reply received from a team member, about your
problem. They write:
it sounds to me that this user is having problems with a URL that
has been added to the registry or something that starts up a webpage
which in it's turn opens another window and another and another.
Best thing this user can do is to check it's system if the following
stuff is installed:
SaveNow
New.Net
NewDotNet
Gator (anything with Gator is bad, known to have a LOT of spyware)
Maybe this user should consider checking out Ad-Aware from Lavasoft:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
This is a freeware (for personal use) spyware and ad-ware checker, a
simple one that removes most malicious and privacy compromising
software. There is another one, a better one which is Spybot Search
and Destroy, but that requires quite some knowledge of Windows so I
don't recommend it to most users.
At first glance it seems a spyware/adware problem, some dialer or
redirect program or script that get's executed upon startup. I have
not looked throroughly through the knowledge and virus database of
http://www.symantec.com/ (which you could do as well offcourse if you
like :) ... )
Anyway, I haven't found anything indicating a virus, it could be a
worm offcourse...
I recall this problem occuring on my PC at some point as well, I
remember installing something that installed a lot of spyware next
to it and that caused a lot of problems. I also know of a couple of
websites that can cause this kind of behaviour... The best thing to
do is try and use a spyware remover and then install a firewall that
disables programs from randomly and wildly accessing the internet,
which it appears this to be...
For now, this is where I have to leave it ... I will continue to
look further.
Cheers,
Alex.

First of all, let me express my thanks for your existence. It is all
too few and far between people helping people!!!
I have tried ad-aware, regvac, and spybot. I have gotten rid of Kazaa.
I have updated and run Norton 2002. Seems stable now.
Question:
1) Can Kazaa be used safely or am I just asking for trouble?
2) Do I need all 3 ad-aware, regvac, and spybot, cuz I accept
everything they do and have little knowledge of what may be ok and
important to retain.
3) Norton never finds anything. Am I wasting my time with Norton or
doing something wrong?
Finally, thank you very much!

Hello Jack,
... Those are very nice comments, and thanyou from all of us. :)
... In regards to your questions, ie...
Q1) Can Kazaa be used safely or am I just asking for trouble?
A: I think you are just asking for trouble. It was a smart move to get
ride of it.
Q2) Do I need all 3 ad-aware, regvac, and spybot, cuz I accept
everything they do and have little knowledge of what may be ok and
important to retain.
A: I have less knowledge than you, since I use an Amiga computer. I
will run your note by the PC guys.
Q3) Norton never finds anything. Am I wasting my time with Norton or
doing something wrong?
A: My guess is if it nver finds anything, then you are wasting you
time. That F-Prot anti-virus program is real good, and that is my
recommendation, but maybe the PC guys have other suggestions.
Special Note: The Virus Help Teams forum has moved (process of moving).
I cannot post using the Bravenet forum, unless I boot up my 486-pc,
which I'm now on. I tried to re-create your posts and my replys at the

New Forum Location: http://www.vht-can.ca/forum.html
The drawback is, that we won't be able to get the Bravenet notices to

... I'll go get your questions sent off to the pc guys..

1) Well, using Kazaa in a save way is nearly impossible in my opinion.
The normal Kazaa installs at least ONE adware program that is
constantly providing you with extra pop-up commercials during normal
internet surfing.
It is allso my humble opinion that through the Kazaa network, a lot of
malicious viruses are spread. Someone that doesn't have a proper or
properly updated virus killer, and a firewall that prevents occasional
hacks from newbie users with cute little trojan viruses, that someone
can end up in a lot of trouble.
2) All you really need is Ad-Aware. Spybot does find a lot more but
also checks your registry and offers changes and fixes for that which
is fine if you are an advanced user. If you are not then Ad-Aware from
lavasoft is quite sufficient.
Better to have a proper firewall with ad-blocking (like Norton Personal
Firewall 2003 or later) then to check constantly for cookies and
ad-ware software after the damage is done. Offcourse, ad-blocking does
not stop everything but it WILL .. or SHOULD stop those windows from
popping up at startup for example, and also will prevent some and in
some cases most pop-up windows and even commercial pictures (banners
etc) from websites (blank spot in the website).
However, NPF does tend to lock you out of a website or two, but then I
just turn it off for the time that I am using that particular website.
3) It is a misconception that when a virus killer does not find
anything, that it is not working or not worth the effort.
In my humble opinion the Norton software is very good. I have stopped a
LOT of malicious viruses from entering my system originating from
e-mail to p2p file sharing with friends and clients.
In the case of the random window popping up, that is something no
killer will prevent nor detect unless it was done by a real virus. But
in this case I doubt it was/is a virus that was/is doing that.
If you still have these annoying popups at startup, check your startup
folder to see if there is a program there you don't trust.
Use MsConfig to check your startup as well, you never know what is
hidden from your sight.
More importantly though, write down what these random opening windows
have for title. Are they all the same? What is the title or what ARE
the titles? Do a search on your harddrive for anything with:
gator
savenow
newdotnet
new.net
There are some more I could mention but they will give you both good
AND bad files (potentially) so best to wait with that.
Maybe making a screenshot (PrintScrn and save in a paint program or
something) if possible would be a good thing. You could mail it to me
personally if you like.
Right now it could be a number of things but what I think is that you
must have a link (url or .exe) starting up at the beginning that will
pick up ads and pop them up. It is not done by a virus I think,
something the gator corporation probably let loose on your system
(installed by Kazaa)
The three things to have on your system in my opinion are:
- Anti-virus program (Norton Antivirus 2002 or later is not bad, I have
that and works quite well)
- Firewall (Norton Personal Firewall 2003 or later is not a bad idea, I
have this one and am quite happy with it)
- Ad- and spyware removal program (Ad-Aware or Spybot, not both, just
one is enough)
This is it for now... I will keep on looking again :)
Cheers,
Alex.

I was asked by Charlene to answer esp. q2 about adaware and such: IMHO
it is enough for a "normal" user to use the program from Lavasoft. It's
efficient and do not require any special knowledge.
As to q1: Kazaar and other filesharing programs are known to assist
people in spreading vira. Even some files that pretend to be eg
programs can contain vira and nothing else. Use it if you like
restoring your system often :)

The best thing you can do is get yourself either a version of your
anit-virus program that can be run from a floppy or CD (a CD is the
best way since it can hold a bit more data then a floppy ;-) )... have
Windows run in save-mode (press F8 before the Windows logo screen
appears) and then run your anti-virus program. It should then be able
to restore/fix your system.

You don't necessarily NEED to run from floppy or CD... you can
offcourse use the installed one your drive but to be completely sure
that the program you are running is virus free, you'd best get a
stand-alone one that you made on a computer that is 100% virus free.

VHT-CAN is now back up and our Shadow-Realm host was able to restore
it fully, back to the state it was in when the server went down.
Extensive work went into restoring the data which is why the process
has taken so long. The server had to be fully reinstalled and the
hardware physically moved around during restoration work.

Hello Chatters,
... All new messages to the chatscreen, are posted at the bottom of
the chatscreen. Due to this, some people have had problems scrolling
to the bottom to see if a new message has come in. I will be seeing
if getting rid of all the auto-refreshe meta tags fixes this problem
... In the meantime, after entering your message, and using the 'Post
This' button, or even after a refresh by using the same post button,
you can use both these keypad keys found above four your arrow keys:
a) go to top ..... Home
b) go to bottom .. End

| Insert | | Home | | Page Up . |
`--------' `------' `-----------'

Happy chatting

Hello Chatters,
It appears as though there is a problem just now with the server that
houses the chatroom. When trying to log into chat with your handle,
you will probably get an "Internal Server Error" message come up.
I am looking into this, and will have a solution as soon as possible!!

Hello Chatters,
... The servers that house the Virus Help Teams webchat are still
not back online. The physical move of the servers was to initally
take 3-4 hours, but has gone into the second day, now.
... I'm sorry for the delay, but the server is handled by the owner
of the service that is used, and not by any member of the Virus Help
Teams. When the webchat server has made it's way to the new location,
you can once again log into chat at http://www.vht-can.ca/chat.html
Till later,
Charlene

Hi Jan,
... It was actually made when we re-did the new chat service, just
in case some non-registered person wanted to ask a question of
you people. Thought it would come in handy having the seperate
Teams - then easy for us to see who the message is for.
Neat that you used it -- even neater that you 'found' it heheee
... When you read the news at vht-can, you will notice I started a
vht-can maillist - you mentioned in the vht-dk announcement that
there was one, but there wasn't (took it as my 'que' to get my bum
in gear and get one started so people wouldn't miss any virus
alerts)... I'm taking for granted that you will try to manage to
get them to my mailbox so they can be posted. )
Take care, from your VHT Buddy,
Charlene

Hello Folks,
... As you may or may not have noticed, the Bravenet services have
done a major over-haul. A lot of the links and coding have all been
changed, and sometimes links are just non-existant.
... Hopefully they will be correcting this, as it will be a shame to
loose all the work that the individuale teams have put in for there
respective services.
Wishing us all, better days ahead

... Nice to see that someone from Bravenet has put up a test post
-- but... there is still no buttons available to click on, in order
to start a new subject, or even to reply to an already posted topic.
Question: Can this ever possibly be fixed ???? It has been like
this since the change.

Hello,
... I've been working on a new forum format. This buisness at Bravenet
is really starting to bother me, and find it very difficult to manage
things, easily. The optional word is 'easily'.
... If anyone else has an idea of what to incorporate, or leave out
(ie. all the writing describing what the forum is about etc.), then
please leave a message.
